WINNER! Nailympia 2015 Reality Nail Art

At the beginning of October I entered my first every nail competition, Nailympia.  Held at the Olympia Exhibition Centre in London, Nailympia is an international nail competition currently in its 11th year. Contestants fly in from all over the world – this year there were teams from Japan, Sweden, Italy, Hungary + more!

After winning the Scratch Stars Awards Mobile Nailist of the Year award, I was encouraged to enter Nailympia by my “nail mum”/mentor, Anna Lee (London’s CND Educator). I entered 3 categories: Gel Polish, Runway Nails and Reality Nail Art.

I’m really pleased to let you know that I won 3rd place/bronze in the Reality Nail Art category! A new category for 2015, this was based around creating wearable nail art designs for 3 age ranges – Under 25’s, 25-45’s and Over 45’s. It was a great feeling stand on the podium with my fellow winners and I’m pleased with the designs as they really do reflect the NAILS BY METS styles.  We only had 45 minutes to create the designs and some of the key objectives was making sure that the designs could be worn every day (as a full set or accent nail), replicated quickly and easily in a salon environment and the designs must replicate current trends in the UK and USA.

For the Under 25’s (right) look I created a pastel ombre, star design. The current unicorn/My Little Pony, pastel hair obsession inspired this look.  The sharp coffin nail shape is kept long for this age group, as seen on many celebrities; think Kylie Jenner.

The 25’s to 45’s look is a negative space geometric design with stud detail, which is to be worn as an accent nail.  The negative space trend has really hit mainstream this year although it has been around for some time.  This design is not too colourful and young but it’s also not too serious and boring. I used a dark blue so that the contrast between the natural nail colour isn’t too harsh (e.g. if I had used black)

The final design for the Over 45’s is very chic and could be worn on every single nail or as an accent. The half moon border outline in brown against the nude slightly irridescent colour and gold buckle nail tattoo are reminiscent of Chanel handbags, expensive loafer buckles.

With my good friend and hand model, Anika Bathia, for the Gel Polish category I ranked #7 out of 21 which wasn’t too bad as I felt like it was a complete failure! I have to give Anika a massive thanks for all her patience and help in the run up to the competition and for lending me her hands & nails!

My bronze medal and certificate – as this was my first competition, I entered into Division 1. Next year, I will enter Division 2!

Despite the pressure and nerves (which made m feel sick to my stomach!), I had such a great experience competing and I will definitely do it again!  It helped push me outside of my comfort zone and improve on my techniques.  Well done to the Nailympia organisers and Scratch Magazine for putting on a great competition – it was a great introduction into the nail competition world!
